“It’s not joy that makes us grateful, it’s gratitude that makes us joyful.”
I’ve been listening to different podcasts about the Enneagram ever since I figured out which type I am about a month and a half ago. I am so intrigued by this subject as I feel like it explains so much about my life and why I think and act the way I do. I have become so much more in touch with myself recently.
One of the podcast series I’ve been listening to had an episode titled, “The Anxiety of Joy.” I decided to give it a listen as I was gettin ready one morning. I took so much away from this episode. They discussed one of the biggest issues I experience: continually chasing happiness. I’ve always been one of those people that says, “I’ll be happy when __ happens.” Always thinking that once one thing happens, that’s when I’ll be happy.
This is a subject I am very familiar with and one that actually came up in one of my counseling sessions this past year. One of the hosts from this podcast talked about the big moment he was waiting his whole life for and how once he achieved it, he realized that moment was not as big as he thought. He realized it was actually the process of getting to that moment that brought him joy.
I think that is such a true statement. As much work, stress, etc. building my business has been, this process has changed my life; I’ve grown in ways I never thought possible. It is my goal to soak in every minute of this process without waiting for that “end point” to bring me joy. I experience joy with every class I teach and every time someone tells me my words have inspired them. No one moment is ever going to outweigh all of my day to day experiences.
I have been pretty good about taking time to meditate and say my morning mantras most days, but I still need to work at being consistent. I am going to start adding three things I am grateful for each morning. I am also going to bring my attention to gratitude in times of stress or sadness, and I challenge you to do the same!
Last November I did 30 days of gratitude on my Facebook and Instagram pages and I felt like I was in a constant state of bliss. The host of this podcast said he is significantly happier today than he was five years ago. The stress in his life has not gone away; he simply starting writing out a list of gratitude each morning. This is such a quick and simple task to do. If it has the power to completely change your life, why not take just one minute each morning to do it? When you seek out the good in your life, you’ll start to focus on that instead of what isn’t.
“Nothing is missing from this moment.”
Take a moment each day to soak in all the good in your life. This doesn’t mean life is all roses and you’ll never have a bad day or won’t have a negative thought, because that is just apart of life. What it means is that you take time to appreciate what you do have and acknowledge you’ll get through whatever struggle you’re dealing with.

- Investing in myself and taking the time to heal, learn and grow.
